Abstract

The use of fish meal and detergent water was shown in field studies in Andhra Pradesh, India, to be simple, economic and reliable as an attractant in traps for adults of Atherigona spp., especially A. soccata Rond., a pest of sorghum. Various mixtures of fish meal with other ingredients were evaluated. The most potent mixture was fish meal with yeast and ammonium sulfide, but generally fish meal alone was adequate and the most readily available attractant. The attractancy of fish meal was found to be related to its degradation; it increased from the first to third or fourth day, and then decreased. The compounds responsible for the attractancy of fish meal are probably amines resulting from biodegradation of the meal
