Abstract

Topics discussed include the identification of eight centres of origin by Vavilov, each centre coinciding with the sites of the world's ancient civilizations; and the classification of geographic patterns of crop variation into the following groups: endemic, as exemplified by Brachiaria deflexa; semiendemic, as exemplified by Oryza glaberrima; monocentric, coffee, rubber, cacao and oil palm; oligocentric, wheat; and noncentric, sorghum, Phaseolus vulgaris and raddish. Emphasis is placed on African distributions, since they can be discerned more clearly than those of other continents.
