Abstract

Fortyeight selected germplasm lines of bajra were grown in randomised blocks during 1967 and 1968 monsoon seasons. The grain samples of the harvested lines were analysed for their protein, phosphorus, calcium and ash contents. The heritability estimates were high for protein content in varietal stocks, for calcium in varietal stocks and Indian inbreds, for phosphorus in Indian inbreds and ash in African varieties only and medium in Indian inbreds for protein and ash content and in American inbreds for calcium and phosphorus. For yield and its components, the heritability estimates were generally medium to low probably due to high genotype-environmental interactions and due to the fact that material studied was selected for yield and its components. Differences due to genotype-environmental interaction were more pronounced in American inbreds and this masked the variation due to genotypes for chemical constituents, grain yield and other plant and grain traits except for the vegetative period and earing span.
