Abstract
Data on the chemical composition of 176 lines of pearl millet (bajra) representing Indian varieties, Indian inbreds, African varieties and American inbreds were statistically analysed for genetic evaluation of protein, phosphorous, calcium, ash, and oxalic acid content of green fodder. Heritable differences were worked out and correlation and regression analysis conducted. High heritability for protein, phosphorous, calcium and ash contents was observed but oxalic acid had very low heritability in all the groups of germ plasm. In general, protein and phosphorous contents were interrelated, while calcium, ash and oxalic acid were interrelated. There was great potential in breeding for high protein and phosphorous contents but scope for improving calcium content was limited because of its association with oxalic acid, an undesirable character.
