Abstract
The roots of three varieties of sorghum plants were injured and the spread of the red stalk rot pathogen, Colletotrichum graminicola, was followed in artificially- inoculated stalks. As compared with normal plants, root-injured plants exhibited a greater rate of cell death in stalks with a concomitant and proportional spread of fungal mycelia. It is concluded that root injury hastens the death of stalk cells and this predisposes the sorghum plant to red stalk rot susceptibility
