Abstract
Three haploid plants were identified, two among progeny of trisomics and one derived from methyl methanesulphonate - treated grains. The haploids had reduced plant size, thin stems, small, narrow leaves and small, thin spikes in comparison with diploids. At meiosis a chromosomal association of 2II + 3I was found in 33.33% of the cells at diacinesis. The bivalents were mostly rod shaped and V shaped. Ring-shaped bivalents were found in 1.45% of the cells at diacinesis and a U-shaped chromosome was observed in two PMCs. Chromosomal associations higher than bivalents were not found. Secondary associations of univalents (end to end, side to side and end to side) were observed in addition to bivalents. The pollen grains formed were of unequal sizes. Pollen fertility was low.
