Abstract
Field trials were carried out in South Africa in 1978-83 to determine the effectiveness of a granular formulation of Volaton (phoxim) against the soil pests Heteronychus arator, Astylus atromaculatus and Tenebrionidae in maize and sorghum crops. Furrow application of the compound to maize at 2.0 g/m row gave consistently good control of H. arator; the densities of the other pests were low. The compound was also safe to grain sorghum seedlings when applied at the same rate and placed above the seed in the planting furrow. It is concluded that phoxim has good prospects as a soil insecticide for use in maize and grain sorghum crops in South Africa.
