Abstract
During a study carried out in Maharashtra, India, in the kharif (hot) and rabi (cool) seasons of 1974-75, numerous sorghum genotypes were screened for resistance to Chilo partellus (Swinh.). The percentage stem length tunnelled and internodes attacked was smallest in E-303 in the hot season and in E-302 in the cool season, and greatest in CSH-1 in both seasons. The maximum damage was recorded in CSH-1 and the minimum in E-303 and E-302 in both seasons. In a single row experiment in which 8 genotypes were tested, the minimum incidence of C. partellus based on internal damage was recorded in I. Savner and Ramkel and the maximum in SGIRL-ML-1. The maximum leaf injury index was recorded in SGIRL-ML-1 and the minimum in Bilichigan. It is suggested that the parents of the varieties tested, such as BP-53 (a parent of E-302 and E-303) and 2077-A, should be tested rigorously in future breeding programmes
