Abstract

Field-plot trials were carried out in India over 3 years to evaluate 20 resistant sorghum sources for their response to infestation by Atherigona soccata Rond. after late sowing (3rd week of July) to ensure heavy infestation, in comparison with 2 susceptible lines. The average egg population was lowest (0.07-0.13/plant) in the lines IS 5642, IS 5490, IS 5469 and IS 4664. Significantly fewer deadhearts (14.9-18.5%) were observed in the lines IS 5490, IS 4664, IS 5359, IS 5469, IS 5642 and IS 2146 than in the other lines tested. When high-yielding and resistant varieties were crossed, the F1 and F2 generations showed no deadheart formation in spite of oviposition by the pest; this character was therefore heritable. In the F2 generation of crosses of resistant varieties with resistant or susceptible ones, the percentage of such plants was 16.8 and 6.3, respectively. Such selection may provide a criterion for transferring and/or strengthening antibiosis in breeding for resistance
