Abstract

Vegetable oils as mutagens were first recognized by D'Amalo and Avenzi(1949). High frequencies of mutations and chromosomal aberrations are reported by Swaminathan and Nataranjan (1956, 59) in wheat, rice and broad bean treated with vegetable oils. Reduction In germination percentage was observed by Swaminathan and Natarajan (1959) in wheat seeds treated with castor. coconut, gingely, groundnut, linseed, mustard oils as well as hydrogenated groundnut oil and ghee. Thomas (1960) reported similar results with bassia, groundnut and castor oils. Unsaturated fatty acids, like oleic and ricinoleic acids induced chromosomal aberrations in barley but inefficiently (Bhatnapar, Kumar, Sharma and Mehrotra, 1969). Present investigation was undertaken to study the intensity of mutagenic effects of vegetables oils on cross- pollinating crops.
