Abstract

Food legumes, also called as pulses, are a major source of dietary protein and minerals for the rural and urban masses particularly in Asia, Africa and South America. Pulses are most important in India which produces about 25 % of the world total and where a large proportion of the population is vegetarian. However, these crops are generally grown in marginal lands under rain-fed condition with little or no inputs. Consequently, the average xields are very low leading to stagnant production and continuous decline in per capita l availability. Among several biotic and abiotic constraints, drought is a major cause of low and unstable yields in most of the pulses. Therefore, concerted efforts are being made by national, regional and international centers to identify sources, conduct genetic studies and develop improved varieties with drought tolerance. Success in genetics and breeding for drought tolerance in the past has not been as pronounced as for other traits partly due to the lack of simple, reliable and fast screening methods and partly due to complexity of the factors involved. However, in recent years, improved, fast and factor-specific screening methods have been developed which have enabled rapid progress in genetic studies and breeding for drought tolerance in many pulses. Also, the recent advances in biotechnology have enabled study of specific mechanisms and isolation of specific genes conferring drought tolerance which can be introduced to target crops.
