Abstract
Serratia marcescens is a non sporulating bacterium which is capable of killing several different insect pests by inciting disease (Steinhaus 1949. Bucher 1959). In India chromogenic strain and less chromogenic strain of the bacterium have been reported from Athalia proximu Klug and Prcdmia lltura F. respectively and a chromogenic strain was pathogenic on 15 new insect hosts under artificial inoculations (Bogawat, Rangarajan, and Chakravorty 1966 ; Pandey and Rangarajan, 1967, Rangarajan, Srivastava and Chakravorty 1968). Based primarily on chrornogenesis several strains of the bacterium have been differentiated (Stevenson 1939, Bucher 1959, Rangarajan, Chakravorty and Srivastava 1968).
