Abstract
Forty-two Fj forage sorghum hybrids, obtained by crossing 7 sorgo varieties (males) to 6 grain sorghum A-lines (females), were studied under dryland conditions. Estimates for relative general and specifiic combining ability effects for forage yield were obtained. An analysis of variance components; indicated that general combining ability effect was 20-Ji times greater than specific combining ability effect for forage yield. Variance component for general combining ability of male parents was 10.6 times greater than for female parents. Although some high relative estimates of specific combining ability were obtained in certain crosses, the results suggest a greater effect of sorgo varieties over grain sorghum A-lines on variance between crosses.
