Abstract
Studies on pollen storage procedure and opt. time of pollination were carried out in 2 Pennisetum americanum inbreds and their reciprocal hybrids. The viability of pollen was judged by the percentage of seed set on male sterile line Tift. 23-A. A considerable reduction in pollen viability with the pollen stored for 24 h at ambient temp. (89 deg F) was noted, while no significant differences in seed set were observed between fresh pollen and pollen stored for 1 day at 40 deg and 2 days at 58 deg with almost 100% RH. The pollen stored at 58 deg had greater longevity for 14 days than that stored at 40 deg , where considerable reduction in seed set was observed after the 4th day. No appreciable differences were observed with the pollination done at 1000 h and 1300 h, while reduced seed set was observed when pollination was delayed till 1700 h.
