Abstract
This paper provides an economic assessment of the value of cattle and goats in different ecological zones of an agropastoral farming system in southern Zimbabwe. Data on biological productivity, milk production, sales and slaughters, manure production and work rates are presented and economic value is derived from market or replacement cost assessments. Costs of herding and veterinary care are included in the cost-benefit calculations. Patterns of investment in livestock in the communal areas are discussed in relation to the valuations made. Returns to land in communal area livestock systems are found to be considerably higher than in conventional beef ranching systems, as long as the full value of livestock products and services are accounted for. Effective economic valuations require a detailed knowledge of the livestock system
