Continuous variation of a trait is usually caused by the simultaneous segregation of many genes that affect the trait and by a multitude of nongenetic factors. However, continuity as such does not unequivocally indicate polygenic inheritance, since small differences between genotypic values may be blurred by nongenetic variation.
