Abstract

Studies were conducted in the greenhouse on the influence of P, K, and Fe on yield and organic N content of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.Moench.) grown on two calcareous soils. Small responses in forage yields to additions of P were measured in both soils. Plants grown on Clareville clay loam and Victoria clay failed to respond to K applications. Soil applications of Fe with and without K on Clareville clay loam increased yields substantially when a high level of P was added. Leaf anomalies similar to N deficiency and necrosis were alleviated by applied Fe. No typical Fe deficiency symptoms were present. Increases in the K content of the tissue were associated with the response to applied Fe. The organic N content of the tissue was directly related to the K content. Field experiments on the Clareville soil substantiated the greenhouse findings in relation to forage yield response to Fe. Leaf aberrations similar to those present in the greenhouse were partially cured by Fe sprays. Although K and organic N contents in the leaves were largely unaffected by Fe sprays, the seed contents of these two plant components appeared to be related to applied Fe. Iron concentrations in the tissue did not appear to be associated with any of the growth differences.
