Orientation, settling, and ovipositional responses of spider mite, Oligonychus indicus (Hirst) in sorghum

Abstract

The behavioral and physiological responses governing antixenosis in relation to spider mite, Oligonychus indicus (Hirst) were studied at 25 days old, flag leaf, and half bloom stages of twelve grain sorghum cultivars (CSV 8R, CSV 14R, Sel 3, SPV 913, Swati, RS29, IS 2146, IS 2312, IS 5613, ICSV 705, Lakadi, and M35-1). In ‘multiple choice test’ the orientation and colonization response of females due to visual attraction though identical, significantly less colonization was observed on RS 29, IS 2146, Sel 3, and Swati at 25 days old; CSV 8R, CSV 14R, and M 35-1 at flag leaf; and CSV 8R, CSV 14R, and IS 2146 at half bloom stages. In general the level of antixenosis for colonization of larvae and nymphs was greater on RS 29 and M 35-1 at all the three growth stages. Results demonstrate the predominant role of gustatory over visual and olfactory stimuli in the adult females, but vice versa in the larvae and nymphs for orientation and settling response towards the host plant. On CSV 8R, SPV 913, and RS 29 significantly less oviposition was found consistently at all the growth stages indicating low to moderate levels of antixenosis.
