Abstract

Huayu 40, a large-podded groundnut cultivar (Arachis hypogaea) (Figs. 1 and 2), developed at Shandong Peanut Research Institute (SPRI), Qingdao, China was approved for release in 2011 in Anhui in China by the Anhui Provincial Crops Approval Committee. Prior to approval, Huayu 40 was evaluated in tests under the name of 08-test-A2. Different from previous reports on chemical mutagenesis where seeds rather than flowers were treated, for development of Huayu 40, 0.3% ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS) was injected directly into flowers of Huayu 16, a groundnut cultivar also developed by groundnut breeders from SPRI (Wang et al. 2010).
