Abstract

In this communication the problem of low productivity of groundnut under rain-dependent conditions is addressed by comparing four newly developed varieties, selected following a holistic approach, with local cultivar (GG 20). On-farm trials were conducted in five villages in Gujarat, India varying in average annual rainfall. Based on past 10 years rainfall data, villages (locations) were grouped into low (500 mm) and moderate (900 mm) rainfall areas. Based on the performance in on-farm trials for two rainy seasons, farmer preferred varieties were identified. Farmers’ preference in varietal selection varied in the two different rainfall areas. For instance, farmers in low rainfall area preferred three varieties, ie, ICR 3 (100%), JAL 42 (75%) and JUG 16 (25%) while farmers in moderate rainfall area preferred only two, ie, giving first preference to JAL 42 (100%) and second to ICR 3 (100%). Such differential preference in varietal adoption pattern indicates farmers’ preferred traits in a variety suitable for the particular agroecological niche. For example, in ICR 3, drought tolerance, fresh-seed dormancy, stability in shelling outturn and higher biomass productivity seem to be desirable traits for cultivation under rain-dependent condition while in JAL 42, lack of fresh-seed dormancy, better performance in flowering and total pod yield under favorable condition, and higher leaf area index during early crop growth stages seem to be desirable traits for cultivation under irrigated condition. In addition, farmers in low rainfall area also preferred JUG 16, which possesses relatively lesser maturity period and by virtue of this acquires ‘drought escape’ trait. Hence, groundnut productivity could be enhanced by developing varieties possessing suitable traits for each agroecological niche varying in average rainfall or water availability. Varieties possessing drought tolerant traits should be promoted in low rainfall area, and varieties having the traits to develop early leaf area cover and higher productivity should be promoted in moderate rainfall area.
