Abstract

Different indices for evaluating productivity and efficiency per unit area of land of cereal-legume intercrop systems, including Land Equivalent Ratio (LER), are compared. Competition between component crops for light, water and nutrients and agronomic factors such as crop density, sowing date and N application are discussed. Light and nitrogen were the main factors influencing the production efficiency of cereal-legume intercropping systems. The cereal determined the DM, grain and grain protein yields of the mixture but LER trends were associated with legume rather than cereal yields. It was concluded that the production efficiency of cereal-legume intercropping could be enhanced by using more effective Rhizobium strains and lower N rates so as to maximize N fixation by the intercrop legume
