Abstract
India is the largest producer of sorghum in the World. It has a giant share of sorghum in Asia (Fig. 1). Sorghum used to be grown on approximately 17.4 mfllion hectares with a production of 8.1 million :onnes with an average yield of 467 kglha till the Seventies. Gradually, adoption of hybrids and improved package of practice, has resulted in increase in the production and productivity. However, the demand for grain has decredsed because of the easier availability of elite cereals, wheat and rice. In addition, the low price of sorghum discouragesthe fdrmers for taking up sorghum cultivation in preference to other attractive cash and oilseed crops like groundnut, sunflower, safflower, cotton and chillies. Consequently, there is a decrease in the area cultivated under sorghum. However, production and productivity have increased. During 1989-90, sorghum was produced on 14.95 million hectares yielding 12.9 million tonnes and the average per hectare yield is 864 kglha
