Abstract
The performance of soyabean (cultivars JS 93-05 and JS 335) and pigeon pea under intercropping was evaluated in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, India, during 2007-08. The treatments consisted of: sole soyabean, with plants 30 cm apart; sole pigeon pea, with plants 60 cm apart; 2 rows of soyabean between 2 rows of pigeon pea (additive); 4 rows of soyabean followed by 2 rows of pigeon pea with a spacing of 30 cm (replacement); and 3 rows of soyabean in a skip of paired rows of pigeon pea (additive). Growth and yield parameters (plant height, number of nodules and pods per plant, number of branches and nodes per plant, number of seeds per pod, seed yield per plant, test weight, biomass yield, grain yield and harvest index) were adversely affected when soyabean was intercropped with pigeon pea or when pigeon pea was intercropped with soyabean under the additive systems. However, under the replacement system, seed yield per plant in pigeon pea was increased by 11.9% compared to sole pigeon pea. Sole pigeon pea was superior to sole soyabean in terms of land equivalent ratio (LER), net profit and benefit cost ratio. All the intercropping systems registered higher soyabean equivalent yield and LER than sole cropping. The highest net profit (38 090 rupees/ha) and benefit:cost ratio (2.71) were obtained under soyabean and pigeon pea intercropping under the 3:2 additive system. JS 93-05 was more suitable for intercropping with pigeon pea than JS 335
