Abstract

In an experiment conducted in Dhule, Maharashtra, India, during the kharif of 2000, 2001 and 2002, the grain yield of pearl millet under sole cropping (28.40 quintal ha-1) was higher than that of intercropped pearl millet (26.51 quintal ha-1). However, the yield equivalent (PMYE), net returns, and benefit cost ratio were higher under pearl millet-pigeon pea intercropping system (39.35 quintal ha-1, 17 021 rupees ha-1 and 2.31 respectively) over sole crop of pearl millet (28.40 quintal ha-1, 11 274 ha-1 and 1.76). Among the fertilizer levels, 60 kg N + 40 kg P2O5 ha-1 recorded a higher PMYE (41.06 quintal ha-1) over other treatments except 40 kg N 30 kg P2O5 ha-1 + biofertilizers (40.26 quintal ha-1). Similar results were also observed in terms of net returns (17 740 and 17 599 rupees ha-1). The benefit:cost ratio was highest with 40 kg N + 30 kg P2O5 ha-1+ biofertilizers (2.38) and 60 kg N + 40 kg P2O5 ha-1. The effect of the interaction between cropping system and fertilizer level was significant with respect of PMYE. The application of 60 kg N + 40 kg P2O5 ha-1 under intercropping system recorded a higher PMYE (47.65 quintal ha-1) than the other treatments except 40 kg N + 30 kg P2O5 ha-1 + biofertilizers (46.20 quintal ha-1). [1.0 quintal=100.0 kg]
