Abstract
An on-farm study from 2002 to 2004 explored the feasibility of accommodating a preceding crop, jute (Corchorus capsularis cv. Sonali and Corchorus olitorius cv. Subala) and a succeeding crop green gram (Phaseolus radiatus [Vigna radiata]) in sequence with rice (Oryza sativa) in farmers' fields in Orissa, India. Jute, rice and green gram performed well. The improved jute cultivars consistently produced higher fibre (mean=2.31-2.55 t/ha) than the local cultivar (1.22 t/ha). The grain yields of all improved rice cultivars remained consistently higher (mean=3.32-3.55 t/ha) than that of the local cultivar (1.8 t/ha). Subala and Sonali recorded higher net returns (Rs 15 752/ha and Rs 11 550/ha) than did the local cultivar (Rs 2268/ha). The net returns of rice cultivars Gayatri and Durga were also higher than that of the local cultivar. The benefit-cost ratio of improved varieties was also higher than that of local cultivars. Considering the rice equivalent yield of jute (5.4 t/ha) and green gram (3.3 t/ha), rice productivity could be estimated at 12.2 t/ha, much more than that achieved with monocropping (1.8 t/ha) and conventional jute-rice system (4.2 t/ha). At the end of the first year, available soil N and P did not change much but soil K improved appreciably. At the end of the second year, soil N increased more than P and K. After the third year, there was noticeable improvement in NPK status, 220.2 kg/ha, 27.5 kg/ha and 197.1 kg/ha, respectively. Available soil N, P and K were enhanced by 17.6%, 15.4% and 14.1%, respectively
