Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between molecular marker polymorphism of the parents and performance of the F1 hybrids. A total of fourteen indica rice parents were studied for their diversity through molecular markers. A dendrogram was constructed based on molecular marker distance. Based on genetic distance, the genotypes were grouped into nine clusters. Genotypes CR 1009, TNAU 841434 and AS 95035 showed more divergence between them, even though these three genotypes share a common ancestral parent peta. Forty crosses were made using (four lines and 10 testers) the above parents and F1’S were evaluated along with their parents for expression of heterosis in plant height, number of productive tillers, days to 50% flowering, panicle length, number of filled grains per panicle, 100 grain weight and grain yield. Correlations between molecular marker distance on and per se performance, relative heterosis, heterobeltrosis and standard heterosis revealed that the two yield contributing characters viz., number of productive tillers per plant and panicle length recorded positive significant correlation with marker distance. The maximum heterotic value was observed in CR 1009 / HA 891037 in which both the parents were from different clusters. This implied that genetically diverse parents contributes maximum towards heterosis for improving yield and its contributing characters.
