Abstract

This paper focuses on the risks and opportunities associated with the development of transgenic crops. The advantages of genetic engineering, i.e. the development of pest, disease and herbicide resistance, the improvement of yield and abiotic stress tolerance, enhancement of nutritive value, production of pharmaceuticals and vaccines, are summarized, and the need for biosafety regulations and risk assessment are discussed. Future prospects of research are also identified
