Abstract

The farm garbage can be converted into efficient nutrient pool with energy reserves as vermicompost through earthworms by regulating the moisture levels and mixing the ingredients in proper ratios. Five recipes were prepared: 1. leaf litter (12 Parts) + Cow Dung (3 Parts) + Babul Leaves(4.5 Parts), 2. Cattle feed waste (18 Parts)+ Bean Leaves (3.0 Parts), 3. Saw dust (20 Parts)+ Cow dung(1 Part)+ Dhaincha leaves(1.5 Parts), 4. Paddy straw (12 Parts)+Cow dung (3 Parts)+Babul leaves (4.5 Parts), 5. Wheat straw (15 Parts)+ Cow dung (3Parts)+Dhaincha leaves (4 Parts). These recipes were subjected to feed the three species of earthworms i.e., Eisenia fetida, Eudrilus eugeniae, Peronyx excavatus for the production of vermicompost. There is about 74 -96 percent, 20-24 percent, 43-153 percent increase in N,P,K respectively and a great reduction in C/N ratio about 59-69 percent and in electrical conductivity about 32.6 percent has been observed. The pH was observed about neutral. The total experiment carried out in glass house condition for 120 days during October to January. The present investigation will provide a way for utilizing waste material for production of valuable product as vermicompost. The final product obtained was odourless with high nutrieint status.
