Abstract
Lucerne, white clover, Phalaris tuberosa [P. aquatica], perennial ryegrass, Westerwolds ryegrass, Dallis grass, maize and sorghum were grown in growth cabinets at day/night temperatures of 22.5 deg /17.5 deg C under a 12-h photoperiod and was given an excess supply of nutrient solution. Transpiration rates in terms of water loss/h g dry weight of leaves were measured over a period of 48 h and were highest in lucerne (8.0) and white clover (7.4) and lowest in maize and sorghum (both 2.2 g). Transpiration rates of the grass species were highest with P. aquatica (5.6) and lowest with Dallis grass (3.0 g).ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Peas, maize and sorghum were grown in growth cabinets at day/night temperatures of 22.5 deg /17.5 deg C under a 12-h photoperiod and were given an excess supply of nutrient solution.
