Abstract
Length and weight of pigeonpea roots were measured weekly in different soil layers and compared wi t h estimates obtained f rom a root simulat ion model using dai ly cl imat i c data, soil physico-chemical properties and dry mat ter allocation to roots. Dai l y moisture content and temperature at different soil depths were wel l simulated using sub-routines f rom the CERESMaize model . Dai l y allocation of dr y mat ter to roots was calculated f rom logistic functions f i t ted to the growth data for shoots and roots. Al though root length and weight tended to be underestimated by the model , regressions between measured and simulated root growt h were highly significant so that the model could, wi t h a few modi f icat ions, be used to predict root system development
