Abstract
In field trials pigeonpeas cv. Pusa 84 and Pusa 78 (indeterminate) and Pusa Ageti and DL 781 (determinate) were sown on 10 June, 25 July or 17 Aug. and spaced at 10, 20 or 30 cm within rows 50 or 75 cm apart. Data for 14 growth and yield attributes for 10 June and 25 July sowings are tabulated. Delayed sowing reduced most characters such as plant height, number of branches/plant, raceme length, days to maturity and seed and total DM yield, but increased harvest index and had no effect on 100-seed wt. Av. seed yield/plant was 16.7 and 11.6 g with the 2 sowing dates, 20.2, 15.4, 11.8 and 9.6 g with the 4 cultivars, resp., and in the range 10.0-16.6 g with the 6 plant populations and generally lowest with the highest population. Seed yield/unit area was highest with the highest population. High DM and seed yields were associated with high LAI and leaf area duration, thick stems, high numbers of fruiting branches and pods/plant and long racemes. Harvest index tended to increase with increasing populations. Indeterminate cultivars grown at high populations and narrow spacing developed large leaf areas and made best use of light. Seed yield/unit area was generally highest with indeterminate cultivars, but only determinate cultivars yielded seed from the latest sowing
