Abstract

To examine the physiology of leaf area development in pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) and develop relationships predicting leaf green area, data collected from previous experiments on the rates of node and leaf production, and senescence were re-analysed and field experiments were conducted during the rainy seasons of 1990/91 (studies 1 and 2) and 1994/95 (study 3) in Andhra Pradesh, India. In study 1, node appearance of ICPL 87 was recorded in monthly sowings from June to December 1990. In study 2, nine cultivars from 3 maturity groups (MGs): extra-short- (100-110 days), short- (120-140 days) and medium-duration pigeon peas were sown on 3 July 1990 at 33 plants/m2 for the first 2 MGs, and at 6.7 plants/m2 for the last group. In study 3, conducted in the rainy season of 1994, growth of cultivars of the 3 MGs was measured under irrigated and rainfed conditions. Data on the leaf senescence rate for the 3 MGs was used to develop relationships between thermal time and leaf senescence rate after flowering. Main stem nodes appeared at a constant rate at all temperature treatments. The rate of appearance of main-stem nodes is a linear function of the daily mean temperature, increasing from 20 to 32°C. Crop density and MG did not affect the rate of node appearance on the main stem. The rate of leaf appearance, measured until flowering, was a function of crop density and was not dependent on cultivar or maturity type. The number of main-stem nodes with green leaves decreased in a linear fashion with thermal time elapsed since flowering. The rate of leaf senescence in relation to thermal time was unaffected by plant density and MGs
