Abstract
Genetic variation for some traits was studied in 180 induced mutant lines in the M5 generation of two improved cultivars of Spanish bunch groundnut, i.e. TPG-41 (confectionary and large-seeded) and GPBD-4 (resistant to foliar disease rust and late leaf spot), and in 10 controls, grown during the kharif of 2008 in Dharwad, Karnataka, India. Most of the increases in pod yield were associated with increased 100-seed weight and shelling percentage. Mutants G2-403 (33.39 quintal/ha) and TE 1699 (31.05 quintal/ha) recorded increased pod yields over their respective parents GPBD-4 (30.14 quintal/ha) and TPG-41 (26.74 quintal/ha). Among the GPBD-4 mutants, G3-403 and G3-162 had the highest pod yields (33.39 quintal/ha) and 100-seed weight (47.75 g), respectively, whereas among the TPG-41 mutants, TE-1699 (31.05 quintal/ha and 74.68 g) recorded the highest pod yield and 100-kernel weight. Among the GPBD-4 mutants, 12 mutants showed increased 100-seed weight compared to parent GPBD-4 (37.36 g). Among these mutants, G3-54 (52.20 g) had the highest 100-seed weight. Among the TPG-41 mutants, TE-412 (75.61 g), TE-1898 (75.35 g), TE-1699 (74.68 g), TE-1142 (72.10 g) were superior to TPG-41 (62.96 g). For shelling percentage, the superior mutants among the GPBD-4 mutants were GE-194 (70.50%) and GE-10 (73.66%) compared to GPBD-4 (69.08%). Among the TPG-41 mutants, higher shelling percentage was recorded for TE-1056 (71.32%) relative to parent TPG-41 (66.29%). Fourteen mutants had higher protein contents than GPBD-4 (30.75%). Among these, G3-5428 (34.47) had the highest protein content. Among the TPG-41 mutants, 10 mutants had higher protein contents than TPG-41, among which T2- 4931 (28.72%) was superior. [1.0 quintal=100.0 kg].
