Abstract
In this presidential address to the British Society for Plant Pathology a brief section on the history of tropical plant virology and the role played by UK scientists is followed by general comments on tropical environments, crops, viruses and vectors. Six important virus diseases (cocoa [cacao] swollen shoot badnavirus, African cassava mosaic geminivirus, maize streak geminivirus, rice yellow mottle virus, rice tungro virus and banana bunchy top virus) are considered in some detail as a basis for a more general discussion of some of the main issues raised
