Abstract

A GIS-based study estimated that out of 50.2 million ha of the land in South Asia devoted to rice, after harvest 14.3 million ha was left fallow, of which approximately 82% was located in India. Diverse soil types and climatic conditions could allow the cultivation of both warm and cool short-duration legumes, generating additional employment and income for the local economy.
