Abstract

The ability of the model Y = C × Dr × P, where Y = seed yield, C= mean crop growth rate, Dr = duration of reproductive growth and P = mean fraction of crop growth partitioned to seed yield, to describe yield formation in a total of 7 cultivars of short-duration pigeonpeas was tested at Hyderabad, Gwalior and Hisar in the rainy seasons of 1986 and 1988. Main effects of environment and genotype were significant for Y, Dv (duration of vegetative growth), C, Dr and P. Genotype × environment interactions were significant for all except C. Variations in C, Dr and P explained 78% of the observed variation in Y. Yield increased as C increased to about 6.5 kg/ha per degree day and then declined, but Y showed a positive linear relationship with C and a negative linear relationship with P when data for Hisar in 1986 were omitted. C increased with Dv and plant population, but a negative relationship between C and P meant that plant population had little effect on seed yield. Implications for the agronomy and breeding of short-duration pigeonpeas are discussed
