Abstract
Four heat-tolerant and 3 susceptible inbreds were crossed in a diallel fashion. Tassels from field-grown F1 plants were excised at the start of anthesis and transferred to growth chambers with light/dark temperature regimes of 29/24 and 38/32°C. In vitro pollen germination, anther emergence and tassel colour were determined after 24 h in the growth chamber. Percentage nongerminated pollen (PNP) increased significantly at the higher temperature, the extent of the increase varying among genotypes. Mo17 had the most desirable general combining ability (GCA) effect for PNP at the higher temperature. Specific combining ability effects were significant for PNP, accounting for 51% of the genotype and genotype X temperature sum of squares. Anther emergence of the central tassel spike decreased differentially among hybrids at the higher temperature. Mo17 had the most desirable GCA effect for anther emergence. Anther emergence and pollen viability did not always respond in the same way to high temperature.
