Abstract

Pigeonpea is an important pulse crop of Karnataka State occupying an area of 4.41 lakh hectares and major chunk of the area being Northern Karnataka. It is grow as sole crop and also under intercropping systems with sesamum, bajra, sorghum, greengram, blackgram and cotton. Farmers prefer pigeonpea crop because of its hardiness as well as high market price. One of the ruling variety Maruti (ICP-8863) has become highly susceptible to sterility mosaic disease, which necessitated the identification of high yielding, medium bold seeded variety with resistance to both wilt and sterility mosaic disease. ICPL-87119 (Asha) has been identified by plant breeding unit of AICRP on pigeonpea at ARS, Gulbarga as a high yielding variety with resistance to wilt and sterility mosaic disease.
