Abstract
This paper discusses the development and contributions of the brewing industry since 1949, and the technology of sorghum malting and brewing in Nigeria. The partial productivity of sorghum and barley malts were computed, and data on beer production between I970 and 1983 were collected and estimated with a time series forecasting model. It was observed that productivity could increase if sorghum malt is substituted for barley malt in beer production in Nigeria. However, sorghum malt should be available at low cost. Appropriate sorghum varieties for beer brewing could be produced to satisfy the needs of the brewing industry in the country, provided appropriate policy measures are used to implement the present government policy which bans malt importation. Malting should be done locally through the utilization of local technological capabilities, and entrepreneurs should be encouraged to invest in sorghum production and malting.
