Abstract

The samples of chick pea (Cicer arietinum) seed were collected from Twenty places of farmer stores of Gurugram, Haryana. The mycological analysis through Standard blotter paper and Agar plate technique revealed the presence of 7 species of Aspergillus viz., A flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, A. sydowi, A. ochraceous, A. terreus, A. nidulans and other species were Cladosporium macrocarpum, F. oxysporum F. semitectum, Macrophomina phaseolina, Penicillium notatum, Sclerotium rolfsii, Rhizoctonia solani, R. batatiocola and Rhizopus arrhizus. In these species, Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. ochraceous, A. terreus showed dominance in terms of % occurrence of fungi while other species showed moderate or low level of occurrence. Pathogenicity tests with the dominant fungal isolates carried out in soil mixtures showed that Aspergillus flavus, A. niger caused reduction of germination in comparison to control set. On antifungal screening of essential oils from 25 aromatic plants, Coriandrum sativum and Citrus aurantifolia showed complete inhibition of mycelial growth of all test fungi at 500 ppm. The MIC of the Coriandrum sativum leaf oil was found to be 400 ppm against both the test fungi, found fungicidal in nature, at 600 ppm, completely inhibited the mycelial growth of 11 fungi at 400 ppm,15 fungi 600 ppm and all isolated 16 fungi at 800 ppm. The oil its MIC (400 ppm) was able to inhibit the growth of all 5 discs (each of 5 mm dia.) and single mycelia discs of 7 mm dia., the maximum considered in this study. Thus, fungitoxic potential of oil appeared to be retained heavy inocula density. There was no effect of physical factors viz., highest temp. (100oC), autoclaving and storage up to 90 days, on the activity of leaf oil. Thus, this leaf oil have promising fungistatic/fungicidal having no effect of physical parameters on activity of oil. The GC-MS analysis of leaf oil of Coriandrum sativum revealed that dominant compounds were E-2-dodecanol (17.8%), decanal (15.3%), and E-2-decenol (11.9%), may be used for the management of chick pea deterioration.
