Abstract
New pearl millet cultivars for arid environments need to combine drought adaptation with increased yield potential. We describe here results of three approaches viz., utilization of existing variation in landraces, genetic diversification of landraces and improvement of pure and diversified landraces used to achieve this objective. Evaluation of landraces across, a wide range of environments demonstrated good exploitable differences among, them, both for their response to drought stressed and higher productivity environments. Selection of landraces for creating trait-specific populations was very effective as judged from their performance for various traits. In the diversification study, the comparative performance of parental populations of landraces and elite composites across contrasting environments showed a distinct crossover between two types of material. Crosses between landraces and elite composites exhibited significant and positive heterosis over landrace parents for grain yield and showed an enhanced adaptation range beyond that of their parents. A few crosses showed consistent improvement over both landraces and elite parents demonstrating their usefulness in both drought and good rainfall seasons. The procedure and magnitude of improvement in the selected landraces and population crosses have been illustrated. Development and performance of pearl millet cultivar CZP 9802, through selection within the landraces, is also described
