Abstract
The study determined the work skills required by farmers for farmers in Finger millet production for food and economic security in Benue. Three research questions were answered and three hypotheses were tested for the study. The population for the study was 242 finger millet farmers and 142 extension agents and a sample of 121 farmers and 47 extension agents randomly selected by multistage sampling method. The instrument used for data collection was a 28 structured item questionnaire titled: Work skills for Finger millet Production Questionnaire (WSFMPQ) developed by the researchers from the literature reviewed. The questionnaire had a four point response options of highly required (HR), averagely required (AR), slightly required (SR) and not required (NR) with a corresponding value of 4, 3, 2 and 1responsively. Three experts validated the questionnaire items, two from the department of Vocational Agriculture and Technology Education, and one from the department of crop production all in the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State. Their corrections and suggestions were effected on the drafts to produce the final copy of the questionnaire. The WSFMPQ was administered to 30 similar characterized respondents in Kogi State to test the internal consistency of the items. This gave a Cronbach Alpha coefficient of 0.82, meaning that the questionnaire items are highly reliable. The WSFMPQ was administered with the help of three research assistants. One hundred and sixty were returned and analysed. The results revealed that farmers required 7 skills in establishment of finger millet plants, 7 skills in management of finger millet farm and 14 skills in marketing of finger millet produce. The researchers recommended among others that the identified skills be packaged by skill acquisition centres for training of farmers in finger millet production and extension agents should ensure that the necessary information on the work skill required by finger millet production be delivered to the farmers by all methods and dissemination of information for proper assimilation.
