Abstract
Major distinguishing features: Panicle loose, sometimes contracted; sessile spikelets lanceolate to oblong in space, but never wrinkled or depressed; glumes coriaceous with obscure neves; sessile spikelets awned almost closed when mature unlike sub-series Guineense where sessile spikelets open when mature; pedicelled spikelets are long and slender but persistent in some although deciduous in s.aterrimum.
