Abstract
Agricultural diversification is an essential strategy, which enhances agricultural income, minimizes risks due to
crop failures & helps to earn foreign exchange. It can be designed to poverty alleviation, employment generation &
environmental conservation. Moreover, the agricultural diversification increases both individual & social gain.
Hence, agricultural diversification has become a most popular concept attracting the agrarians, scholars and
economists. Irrigation is the most important element in steady growth of the agricultural sector. It not only
increases agricultural production but also minimize the uncertainty due to unpredictable rainfall. Limited
availability of irrigation is one of the constraints that affect the growth of agriculture in Maharashtra. Therefore; the Maharashtra government has given more importance for the development of irrigation in the state. As a result, the
cropping pattern of the state has changed considerably after the green revolution. however; the main objectives of
the present research work are such as to study the area under irrigation and crop diversification in agriculture in
Maharashtra. This study is based on secondary data which has been analyzed by using discriptive statistics and
presented by using different kind of graphs. It was concluded that there has been a marked decreased of area in
cereals and increasing pulses, oilseeds and cash crops which are comparatively higher value crops. Moreover, the
development of livestock sector is more inclusive and can result in a sustainable agriculture system.
