Abstract

A study was carried out to determine the performance of broiler chickens when yellow maize was replaced with white sorghum as source of energy. The proximate analysis of white sorghum showed that it contained 13% Moisture, 87% DM, 11.20%, CP, 2.98%, CF, 2.07%, Ash 2.5%, 2.5% EE and 68.28% NFE, while yellow maize contained 14% moisture, 86% DM, 8.4% CP, 13% CF, 1.99% Ash, 4.3% EE and 68.81% NFE. In the starter phase of the trial, diet 1 (control) contained maize as the main energy source while diets 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 contained 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% sorghum replacing maize in the control diet. Each diet was fed to a group of 24 broiler chicks for 4 weeks, using completely randomized design (CRD). In the starter phase, the broiler chicks fed, diet 6 (60%) (Sorghum) compared favourable with the control group (P<0.05) in terms of feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio and recorded the highest weight gain. Cost of production was cheapest for the group on diet 6, N178.53 versus N192.27 in the control group. The result of the trial showed that white sorghum can be used successfully to replace yellow maize up to 60% in the starter broilers diets with improved weight gain and feed conversion ratio.
