Abstract
Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L. Millsp.) is one of the major pulse crops of the tropics and subtropics endowed with several unique characteristics. It finds an important place in the farming systems adopted by small farmers in many developing countries. It is the most versatile legume crop with diversified uses such as food, feed, fodder and fuel. The production and productivity of pigeonpea is oscillating greatly due to biotic and abiotic factors. The biotic factors mainly includes insect pests like pod borers, pod fly, pod bugs are causing losses to pigeonpea crop particularly during fruiting stage. Farmers are unable to control these pests to desired level in spite of repeated spraying of pesticides. Among these insect pests legume pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) is one of the major insect pest cause severe damage to pigeonpea crop. Due to indiscriminate use of insecticides pod borer is exhibiting resistance towards a wide range of chemical insecticides. To avoid ill effects of chemical pesticides, use of ecofriendly organic pest management strategies which is mainly concentrating on the maximum utilization of natural resources by integration of different non-chemical pest management practices and the adaptation of need based chemical applications are feasible. With this background investigations on different intercrops which play an important role in managing H. armigera and are safe to the natural enemies, eco-friendly and avoids development of resistance in H. armigera is planned.
