Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate eight sweet sorghum genotypes. Six of the genotypes used were introduced from USA and these are Della, Sugar Drip, Keller, M81E, Atlas and ICS: B213 and two local ones (S.S.1.1 and RSS.11). A number of parameters were considered mainly plant height, stem diameter, harvest time and sugar extractability. The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design with three replications. Growth parameters were measured 15 and 30 days after flowering. The genotypes differed significantly in their plant height. The tallest genotype was Keller (139.6 cm), and at the same time gave the highest stalk yield (22.78 t/ha), the shortest one was ICS:B 213 (93.48cm) and the remaining genotypes fall in this range. The local genotype S.S.1.1 was the thickest one and the thin was Atlas. The juice extractability (ml/Kg) was evaluated and no significant differences were noticed among the genotypes. The highest extractability reached 350ml/Kg. It was attained by the local genotype RSS.11. In terms of all these parameters the best harvest time was 30 days after flowering. This study revealed that the two local genotypes were ranked among the best genotypes with regard to stem thickness and stalk yield.
