Abstract
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) commonly known as Bengal gram is a major pulse crop, which is highly nutritious grain legume and one of the cheapest source of energy, protein with soluble and insoluble fibre. In India, chickpea is grown on an area of 10.22 million hectares with an annual production of 9.88 million tonnes with average productivity of 967 kg per hectare. While, in Karnataka it occupies an area of 0.92 million hectares producing 0.57 million tonnes with an average productivity of 622 kg per hectare (Anon., 2014). In order to increase the productivity, good quality seeds need to be made available to the farmers in time at an affordable price through different seed quality enhancement techniques viz., pre-sowing hydration treatment, coating and seed pelleting techniques. Seed polymerization (coating) is the application of the plasticizer polymer to the seed that does not obscure its shape but forms a flexible film that adheres and protects the active ingredients during handling and storage. Since polymer is readily water soluble, it does not impede the germination and reduces imbibition damages and thereby improves the germination, seedling emergence and also maintains the longevity of the seed for a longer period of time. The improvements in crop growth and yield due to coating or pelleting have been reported earlier (Shakuntala et al., 2010). By seed polymerization, the active ingredients viz., micronutrients, fungicides and insecticides can be applied to the seeds directly in less quantity as compared to soil or foliar application. Therefore, seed polymerization is one of the most economical approaches for improving seed germination performance. With this background, an experiment was initiated in the Department of Seed Science and Technology, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur with the main objective of standardization of polymer seed coating of chickpea seeds for ascertaining seed quality parameters.
