Abstract
This study focused on the estimation of current utilization of sorghum as an industrial raw material and the future potential of this crop, in view of limited propspects of rainy season sorghum for human consumption. Rainy season sorghum is used for industrial purposes. Post rainy season sorghum highly valued food grain and too expensive to be used as industrial raw material. In India poultry feed, animal feed and alcohol distilleries are the main industries currently using sorghum as a raw material. At present poultry feed sector using approximately 1.3 million tonnes, animal feed sector about 0.45 million tonnes followed by alcohol distillers about 0.092 million tonnes of sorghum. The major user, poultry feed sector largely depends on maize which constitute 30-35% of poultry ration. Sorghum is used when maize is in short supply and priced higher than sorghum. Sorghum is used when prices are 20% lower than that of maize. The estimation for the future demand shows that poultry feed industry is going to be the major industry which will absorb huge quantity of sorghum (2.7 -3.1miUlan tonnes) ,followed by dairy feed industry (0.6 million tonnes) in 2010 A.D. Sorghum grain as a raw material for potable alcohol production may get a boost in wake of Government of India's policy to blend ethanol with petrol, as presently used molasses raw material would be diverted to produce bio-fuel. A better link between institutions involved in research on crop improvement in sorghum and the user industries along with research and extension involving the private sector is to he established. Strengthening of the linkages between industries-fanners (like contract-farming) and farmer associations can improve the status of sorghum as well the economy of resource poor farmers, who are growing this crop.
