Abstract
In the seventh selfed generation of composite cv. Nagarjuna (Pennisetum glaucum), one plant exhibited low and variable seed set in different spikes, as well as transmission of variable sterility through male gametes. Although meiosis in PMCs and pollen fertility were normal, plants with full seed set were not obtained in any segregating generations. Apomictic plants were identified at different frequencies in progenies of crosses using genetic markers. In variable steriles, female gametophyte development showed variation within spikes, such as normal and diminutive embryo sacs and multinucleate asporous initials, one of which formed precocious embryos and endosperm. After pollination with a fertile line, variations observed included normal embryo development, formation of undersized embryos and degeneration of embryo sacs
